A note on the art industry in Khartoum

Last night I went to the opening ceremony of the first Sudan Independent Film Festival. This was a momentous occasion and a huge step for the arts scene in Khartoum. I felt truly inspired that people here are working so hard to make these things happen.

I feel so privileged to have played albeit a tiny role in regenerating the arts scene here in Sudan. Having come from Berlin, where people are expressing themselves on every street corner, and artists and creative events are so common that one is spoiled for choice, it is humbling to be somewhere where the arts scene is nothing more than a seedling in the process of germination.

Art here is still something special, something secret, something radical. And it needs all the help it can get, from passionate individuals to investors.
